For years, Fitbit users who also rely on Apple’s ecosystem have had to jump through hoops just to get their health data talking across both platforms. That frustrating workaround era is finally over. Google is rolling out an update to its Health app that lets users sync Fitbit workouts, steps, vitals, and other tracked data directly into Apple Health, no third-party app required.
The process is straightforward enough. Once you grab the Google Health 5.05 update, you just tap your profile icon, head into the Partner apps section, and select Apple Health to link everything together. Before this, the connection only worked one way — you could pull Apple Health data into Google’s app, but sending information back in the other direction required clunky third-party utilities like Power Sync for Fitbit or similar syncing tools that often came with their own headaches and subscription fees.
This integration comes on the heels of a significant transition for Fitbit owners. Google officially replaced the standalone Fitbit app with the new Google Health app back in May, and the rollout was not exactly smooth. Users griped about the redesigned interface, questioned the new AI-powered health coach feature, and raised plenty of other complaints along the way. Google has reportedly addressed several of those concerns since then, though it has been a bumpy road for longtime Fitbit loyalists still adjusting to the change.
Beyond the Apple Health connectivity, Google is also introducing a feature that could genuinely matter for people managing complex medical situations. Users in the United States can now generate Smart Health Links to share medical records with healthcare providers or family members. By navigating to the Medical section under the Health tab and tapping through to Shareable records, users can select specific data points they want included and then distribute access either through a URL or a scannable QR code. It is the kind of practical tool that turns a fitness tracking app into something closer to a comprehensive personal health hub.
