The global memory shortage hits the MacBook Air

1 Mins read

Apple’s most popular laptop is feeling the squeeze as the ongoing global memory chip shortage finally catches up with the MacBook Air. According to reporting from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the scarcity of essential components has moved beyond niche machines like the Mac Studio and Mac mini, now hitting the heart of Apple’s consumer lineup. Retailers are warning that supply levels have become more constrained than ever, leaving many customers facing unexpected delays.

The impact is most visible on Apple’s own storefront, where shoppers attempting to purchase a MacBook Air are seeing delivery estimates pushed well into late August or even September depending on their chosen configuration. This logistical nightmare has forced the tech giant to pivot its strategy, including delaying its traditional back-to-school promotional event which usually kicks off in June.

To combat the crisis, Apple is reportedly exploring new avenues such as sourcing memory chips from Chinese suppliers and considering price adjustments. The shift is also evident in recent advertising campaigns; for perhaps the first time, Apple is steering consumers toward the base model of the MacBook Pro while adding an unusual disclaimer noting that MacBook Air availability may be limited.
