Sunbird is making a surprising return to the Google Play Store, relaunching its controversial bridge between Android and iMessage after a three year hiatus. For a monthly fee of 2.99 dollars, Android users can once again enjoy the coveted blue bubbles, allowing them to send high quality videos and utilize reactions without disrupting the flow of group chats. While Apple and Google have improved cross platform communication via RCS support, many Android users still find themselves causing glitches in iMessage threads, such as breaking reply chains or reaction features.
The original version of the service was shuttered in 2023 following significant concerns regarding security flaws. However, Sunbird claims it has completely overhauled its architecture to address these vulnerabilities. According to CEO Danny Mizrahi, an independent security auditing firm recently tested the rebuilt application and found no critical weaknesses. To reassure skeptical users, the company emphasizes that messages are protected in transit and that any media passing through their systems is typically deleted within 48 hours and never longer than 72 hours.
Technical details provided by the company suggest a heavy focus on encryption to prevent data leaks. Sunbird asserts that messages are encrypted on the device using AES 256 standards before being sent over certificate pinned connections. Crucially, the company states it does not modify or weaken Apple’s own end to end encryption during the final delivery stage to iPhones. Furthermore, Mizrahi clarified that Apple ID passwords are used only once to establish a session and are immediately destroyed afterward so that no permanent authentication tokens remain on their servers.
Beyond just bridging the gap with Apple devices, Sunbird plans to expand into a comprehensive messaging hub. Users can currently access Google Messages and standard SMS within the app, with integration for WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger expected later this year. The roadmap also includes an AI powered assistant designed to help users manage their conversations by summarizing long chat histories and drafting quick replies for efficiency.
