Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 Is for Everyone Who Can’t Stop Scrolling

2 Mins read

Samsung has finally built a foldable phone that doesn’t try to turn you into a productivity machine. The new Galaxy Z Fold 8, unveiled Wednesday at the company’s Galaxy Unpacked event, is aimed squarely at people who just want a better screen for scrolling through social media and binge-watching shows. At $1,900, it sits comfortably between the $1,200 clamshell Z Flip 8 and the $2,100 Z Fold 8 Ultra, which carries over last year’s design language. All three phones are available for preorder now and will hit shelves on August 7.

What sets the Z Fold 8 apart is its passport-sized design with a 4:3 aspect ratio that feels equally suited to watching horizontal video, multitasking in landscape mode, and scrolling through vertical apps like Instagram. It’s compact enough to feel like a small pocket notebook when folded closed, measuring just 9.7mm thick and weighing only 201 grams, making it the lightest Z Fold device Samsung has produced. The company says it collected extensive user feedback before redesigning the phone around media consumption rather than work tasks. Samsung executive Kihwan Kim said the device is “very well suited for people who really enjoy media and social networks,” and after spending time with it at events in Korea and London, that vision comes through clearly.

Samsung has also refined the display technology with something it calls Flex Titanium, which combines a titanium-alloy film with a titanium plate to create a thinner, more durable screen structure. The result is a crease that’s even harder to notice than last year’s already-impressive Z Fold 7, along with an anti-reflective coating that cuts glare by up to 50 percent and a peak brightness of 3,000 nits. The hinge has been retooled too, requiring noticeably less force to open, though you can no longer position it partway like previous models. The phone retains its IP48 water resistance rating, which handles submersion but still doesn’t protect against dust.

The timing of this release is no accident. Apple is widely expected to launch its first foldable iPhone this fall, with rumors suggesting a similar squarish aspect ratio that could echo certain iPad models. Samsung appears to be getting out ahead of that announcement by defining the format on its own terms rather than reacting later. As IDC vice president Francisco Jeronimo put it, this is Samsung going on offense, defending a category it created with years of consumer feedback and multiple generations of hardware already under its belt. Whether that head start will matter once Apple enters the ring remains to be seen, but for now the Z Fold 8 stands as one of the most enjoyable phones to come along this year.
