OpenAI is preparing to move beyond the screen and into the living room with a mysterious new piece of hardware designed to be the physical embodiment of ChatGPT. According to recent reports from Bloomberg, the company is developing a premium AI smart speaker that departs significantly from the standard designs we see today. Instead of a traditional cylinder or box, the device is expected to feature a unique donut shape, allowing users to easily carry it from one room to another and perch it on surfaces like kitchen counters or nightstands.
The device aims for a luxury feel, utilizing high quality metal construction to achieve what insiders describe as a premium aesthetic. Perhaps most intriguing is the mention of moving parts within the hardware, though it remains unclear exactly what these components do or how they enhance the user experience. This focus on industrial design comes via a partnership with LoveFrom, the design firm led by legendary former Apple executive Jony Ive, suggesting that OpenAI is prioritizing form as much as function.
However, this ambition comes with a steep price tag that could alienate casual consumers. While typical smart speakers from giants like Amazon often retail between 40 and 240 dollars, OpenAI’s offering is projected to cost between 300 and 400 dollars. Positioning the product as a high end accessory may help establish its brand identity but poses a risk in a market where smart speakers have historically struggled to remain profitable.
The road to launch, likely slated for sometime in 2027, has already been complicated by legal battles. Apple has filed suit against OpenAI, alleging that the AI laboratory stole trade secrets during its development process. While OpenAI has denied any wrongdoing, the tension highlights just how competitive the intersection of artificial intelligence and consumer electronics has become as companies race to integrate digital assistants deeper into our daily domestic routines.
