Microsoft pressures LG into killing unwanted McAfee ads

1 Mins read

Microsoft has stepped in to stop Windows 11 users from being bombarded with annoying McAfee trial pop-ups every time they connect an LG monitor. The intervention came after mounting complaints from frustrated users who reported that simply plugging in an LG display triggered a cascade of intrusive advertisements for antivirus software they never asked for. Pavan Davuluri, Microsoft’s Windows chief, confirmed that LG has agreed to immediately disable the McAfee pop-ups from its LG Monitor App Installer and pledged that Microsoft will keep working with its ecosystem partners to prevent similar issues.

The problem stems from a Windows driver update process that silently installed LG’s Monitor App Installer without explicitly asking users for permission, a practice that drew complaints dating back as far as 2024. Once installed, the software began pushing large pop-up ads promoting McAfee antivirus trials alongside advertisements for other LG applications. The auto-installation happened seamlessly in the background whenever an LG monitor was connected to a PC running Windows 11, leaving many users confused about where the unwanted notifications were coming from.

LG responded to the backlash with a lengthy statement defending its practices, insisting that McAfee is never installed automatically and only proceeds if a user actively consents. The company emphasized that the LG Monitor App Installer is distributed through Microsoft’s official Windows distribution channels and does not access or transmit any customer personal data. However, critics have noted that the statement seems to sidestep the core complaint, which centers on the aggressive advertising pop-ups rather than whether McAfee itself ends up fully installed on the machine.

Microsoft’s involvement highlights growing concerns about bloatware creeping onto Windows machines through peripheral connections, though the company’s reach only extends so far. Dell has been known to similarly auto-install its Alienware Command Center app when Alienware monitors are connected, and LG itself continues to push ad notifications on its smart TVs during startup. While LG monitor owners can at least breathe easier now that the McAfee pop-ups are being disabled, the broader pattern of hardware manufacturers pushing unwanted software through official operating system channels remains an ongoing frustration for PC users.
