Google says it fixed more Chrome bugs in June than over the past two years, thanks to AI

Google says it has patched more security flaws in its Chrome browser during the month of June than it did over the previous two years combined, a milestone the company attributes largely to its use of artificial intelligence tools. The tech giant announced on Thursday that its two most recent Chrome releases, both rolled out last month, addressed a staggering 1,072 security bugs. By comparison, the prior 23 versions of Chrome released over the past two years collectively fixed 1,036 vulnerabilities.

The company shared data backing up the claim as part of a white paper detailing its efforts to leverage AI for finding and patching software flaws more quickly. Doug Turner, Chrome’s director of engineering, said that large language models have fundamentally shifted the economics of cybersecurity by turning vulnerability discovery into an automated, industrial-scale operation. He said applying models like Gemini allows Google to preemptively fix weaknesses and stay ahead of potential attackers.

Cybersecurity experts have been predicting this shift since the rise of generative AI, warning that AI-powered systems would uncover an exponentially larger number of bugs and force defenders to adopt similar technology just to keep pace. The numbers from Google appear to validate those forecasts, showing a dramatic upward curve in discovered vulnerabilities coinciding with the integration of AI tooling into the development pipeline.

Google is not alone in experiencing this surge. Microsoft earlier this month reported patching a record 570 security flaws across its product lineup during its regular monthly update cycle, known as Patch Tuesday. The company similarly pointed to its growing reliance on AI as a key factor behind the increase. Apple, on the other hand, does not seem to be seeing the same dramatic trend. An independent tally suggests Apple has fixed around 482 bugs so far this year, putting it roughly on par with its own totals from a decade ago rather than reflecting any AI-driven spike.
