Google Photos is making its transition into the era of artificial intelligence a bit more flexible for its users by introducing a dedicated toggle that allows people to switch between classic search and the newer Ask Photos feature. While Google first teased this functionality back in March, the company has officially rolled it out across both Android and iOS devices. This update serves as a significant quality of life improvement for those who find themselves caught between traditional keyword searching and the more conversational approach offered by generative AI.
For users who have already opted into Ask Photos, a new toggle now appears at the top of the search results page. On the left sits the regular search experience we have used for years, while the right side hosts the AI powered offering. In practice, the app attempts to be intuitive about which tool to use; simple one word queries typically stay within the classic search realm, but once a user asks something complex like where their license plate number is stored, the system automatically pivots to Ask Photos to handle the heavy lifting.
The rollout also doubles as an invitation for those who have been hesitant to try Google’s latest AI tools. Users who have not yet enabled Ask Photos will still see their standard search results as usual, but they may notice the toggle appearing at the top of their screen. Clicking it leads directly into an onboarding process designed to walk them through opting into the AI experience, effectively acting as a gentle nudge toward Gemini integration.
This move comes amid a broader wave of updates for Google Photos, including recent redesigns to its interface and New Video Remix capabilities powered by Gemini Omni. By giving users manual control over how they retrieve their memories, Google is acknowledging that while AI is powerful for solving puzzles within a photo library, sometimes a simple search for dogs or beaches is all someone really needs.
