AT&T has issued an urgent warning to its customers using the newly released iPhone 18 Pro Max after reports surfaced regarding significant cellular connectivity failures. In a text message sent out Thursday evening, the carrier urged users to install software update iOS 27.0.1 immediately, noting that some devices are struggling to complete basic phone calls, texts, and data transfers. Most alarmingly, the company warned that these malfunctions could potentially prevent users from reaching emergency services like 911.
Despite the urgency of the alert, many frustrated owners claim that the recommended update hasn’t actually solved the problem. Thousands of users have taken to Reddit and Apple Support forums to report that their phones continue to drop into SOS mode or lose signal entirely. Adding to the confusion is the fact that Apple’s own release notes for iOS 27.0.1 make no mention of network fixes, instead focusing on a correction for Face ID issues on Pro model devices.
Industry analysts are closely watching whether this is a simple software bug or something more systemic within the hardware. Interestingly, the U.S. version of the iPhone 18 Pro Max is currently the only new model utilizing a Qualcomm cellular modem, while other versions and different models use Apple’s proprietary C2 chip. Whether this specific component is causing the instability remains unconfirmed, and Apple has yet to offer a public statement on why so many flagship devices are failing on one of America’s largest networks.
For now, those experiencing intermittent service losses are left waiting for a potential second patch or clarity on whether their expensive upgrades require physical repair. Until then, there remains a certain level of irony in AT&T choosing to notify its customers about their inability to send and receive text messages via a text message itself.
