Feds charge ‘frustrated’ FBI agent they say stole nearly $1 million in crypto from Russia

1 Mins read

In a case that reads like a plot from a spy novel, a former FBI supervisor tasked with working within the U.S. intelligence community now finds himself facing federal charges after allegedly stealing nearly one million dollars in cryptocurrency from Russian accounts. Patrick Yaroch is accused of using his high level of access to locate digital keys and funnel roughly 925,000 dollars into his own personal wallet across a dozen separate transactions. According to court documents, the theft was born out of a sense ofprofessional indignation rather than simple greed.

Prosecutors claim that Yaroch grew increasingly frustrated with what he perceived as the bureau’s inability or unwillingness to take decisive action against cryptocurrency accounts linked to adversaries. He reportedly expressed anger that he could not do more to disrupt these financial networks during an active investigation, leading him to take matters into his own hands by siphoning the funds for himself. Despite the nature of the targets, officials clarified that Yaroch never actually collaborated with any foreign entities or individuals associated with those accounts.

The scheme eventually collapsed when guilt began to weigh on Yaroch, who told investigators that the secret was eating him up inside. In a surprising turn of events, he admitted to making very poor decisions and proactively reached out to the agency via an online self-report form. When agents arrived at his home, he surrendered his credentials and provided full details regarding his cryptocurrency holdings, admitting simply that he had screwed up.

The FBI acted swiftly once the breach came to light, firing Yaroch immediately and emphasizing that such unethical behavior will not be tolerated within their ranks. As the agency conducts a wider internal investigation into how this occurred, Yaroch remains in custody following an order from a magistrate judge in Virginia. His legal representative has declined to comment as the defendant prepares for upcoming hearings on charges involving the receipt and interstate transportation of stolen goods.
