Ex-FBI agent accused of stealing $1M in crypto could face more charges

1 Mins read

A former FBI agent is facing deepening legal trouble after admitting to the theft of nearly one million dollars in cryptocurrency. Patrick Yaroch, once a member of the bureau’s counterintelligence division, was recently fired after confessing to investigators that he had screwed up. While a magistrate judge initially granted him release to his parents’ custody due to the fact that he self-reported his crimes, that decision was abruptly reversed on Thursday. A judge has since stayed the release order and scheduled a new hearing, leaving the disgraced agent in limbo as federal authorities dig deeper into his activities.

According to court documents, Yaroch became exposed to various adversarial cryptocurrency accounts during his official investigations around November 2024. He reportedly told officials that he began spinning out of control, driven by frustration over what he perceived as the FBI’s inability or unwillingness to take action against these specific accounts. Sources close to the investigation indicate that the funds in question were linked to Russia. Currently, Yaroch is charged with the receipt and interstate transportation of stolen goods, though prosecutors warned in court that additional charges may be forthcoming.

Beyond the financial theft, investigators are now scrutinizing Yaroch’s secretive movements abroad. Court filings reveal that he conducted unreported travel to Germany and Portugal in mid 2026, violating strict security requirements for FBI personnel. Further complicating matters is the discovery of power-of-attorney documents granting broad authority to two lawyers in Portugal regarding tax and customs affairs. Although Yaroch maintains that he had no intention of funneling stolen funds into Portugal, these revelations have added a layer of suspicion that likely contributed to the sudden reversal of his pretrial release terms.
