Nvidia boss rejects AI extinction fears as ‘doomsday narratives’

1 Mins read

Jensen Huang, the chief executive of chipmaking giant Nvidia, has pushed back against claims that artificial intelligence could trigger a human extinction event within the next ten years. In a wide ranging interview with CBS News, Huang dismissed these warnings as baseless doomsday narratives, asserting there is zero percent chance that the world will end by 2030. He argued that scaring the public is both unnecessary and irresponsible, suggesting that such catastrophic predictions lack any real grounding in science.

The comments come amid a growing divide within the tech industry regarding AI safety. While several high profile figures, including leaders from OpenAI and Anthropic, have called for a deceleration in the development of powerful models to mitigate risk, Huang views these pleas through a different lens. He suggested that companies calling for a slowdown might actually be attempting to secure liability protections for themselves rather than genuinely worrying about global safety. According to Huang, those advocating for caution should be scrutinized to see if they are simply trying to avoid existing legal responsibilities when their products cause harm.

As a primary provider of the hardware essential for training advanced AI, Nvidia occupies a central role in the current technological gold rush. Huang emphasized that his company’s long term financial success is inextricably linked to the safe and responsible deployment of AI tools. He noted that if the industry fails to prioritize stability and security, the overall value of these technologies would diminish significantly over time.

This perspective aligns him closely with other political figures who view AI alarmism as exaggerated. During a recent appearance at a tech conference in Los Angeles, former President Donald Trump contacted Huang via telephone during his presentation to express similar sentiments. Trump echoed the sentiment that efforts to slow down innovation were misplaced and dismissed various existential fears surrounding the technology as little more than a hoax.
