In what is being called the largest wine heist in Italian history, a sophisticated gang has vanished with roughly 30,000 bottles of ultra-premium vintages from the prestigious Marchesi Antinori estate. The robbery took place late Saturday night at a facility near Cortona in the province of Arezzo, where thieves managed to disable both security alarms and surveillance systems before striking. According to Chief Executive Renzo Cotarella, at least seven individuals used two large trucks and the winery’s own forklifts to efficiently clear out millions of dollars worth of inventory under the cover of darkness.
The haul consists entirely of highly coveted 2023 reds, including legendary labels such as Solaia, Tignanello, and Guado al Tasso. With individual bottle prices ranging from 150 to 500 euros, the total loss is estimated at approximately 5.8 million dollars. This particular vintage was described by Cotarella as an exceptional year, making the loss particularly stinging for the historic house which has been operated by the Antinori family for twenty six generations since its founding in 1385.
Investigators believe they are dealing with a professional criminal organization that may have previously targeted other producers, including a July raid on Castello Banfi where thousands of bottles disappeared. While police and Carabinieri officers are currently scouring evidence and reviewing available footage, the company waited until Friday to go public with the news to ensure they did not compromise the active investigation into how these luxury goods might be fenced.
As authorities track potential leads, Marchesi Antinori has issued a global warning to collectors and buyers. Because of the sheer volume and prestige of the stolen stock, there are concerns that these bottles will begin appearing on secondary markets through unofficial channels. Despite the scale of the crime, Cotarella remains hopeful that law enforcement can recover the shipments, noting that moving two entire truckloads of world famous wine without drawing attention is a daunting task even for experienced thieves.
