Historic Growth Sparks Major Infrastructure Overhaul at Edward Waters University

1 Mins read

Edward Waters University is embarking on a massive transformation of its physical landscape, announcing a series of campus investments totaling over 33 million dollars. At the heart of this expansion is a new 25 million dollar residence facility that will provide nearly 200 beds, marking the first time since 1982 that the institution has added new student housing. This surge in development comes at a pivotal moment for the school, which recently saw enrollment climb to nearly 1,300 students, the highest figure seen in more than two decades.

Beyond the living quarters, the university is expanding its athletic and community footprint with the construction of its first ever on-campus track and field facility. Funded through the U.S. Department of Education’s HBCU Capital Financing Program and supported by a 2 million dollar contribution from the city of Jacksonville, the track is intended to serve both student athletes and local residents via future health and wellness events. President A. Zachary Faison Jr. described these updates as a generational investment designed to enhance how students live, learn, and lead on campus.

The remaining funds are earmarked for an extensive modernization effort across several key buildings. Plans include significant renovations to Centennial Hall and the Lee Cousins Administration Building, along with critical upgrades to laboratories, safety systems, and general infrastructure. The university also intends to build a new student welcome center to better greet incoming cohorts during this period of rapid growth.

These developments coincide with the university’s 160th anniversary and reflect a strong era of financial stability characterized by seven straight operating surpluses. With academic offerings doubling from eight to 17 degree programs since recent expansions began, Edward Waters continues to solidify its role as a growing educational hub in Florida, where nearly 80 percent of its current student population resides.
