Why Trump’s Crypto Business Wants to Become a Bank

1 Mins read

The Trump family is moving toward a significant shift in the financial landscape as their cryptocurrency venture, World Liberty Financial, seeks to transform itself into a bank. This transition has sparked intense criticism from figures like Senator Elizabeth Warren, who has characterized the move as a blatant conflict of interest and an act of corruption. At the center of the controversy is the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, a federal regulator led by an appointee chosen by President Trump himself, which recently signaled that the company could begin the process of obtaining a banking charter.

The motivation behind the project stems from a deep seated grievance within the Trump family regarding their relationship with traditional finance. Eric Trump has previously stated that the foray into crypto was born out of necessity after various banks severed ties with the family following political turmoil and the events of January 6, 2021. While critics argue that many institutions avoided Trump due to his history of bankruptcies, the family views themselves as victims of being debanked and deplatformed, leading them to champion decentralized finance as a way to bypass what they describe as a broken system.

While World Liberty Financial does not intend to operate like a typical retail bank offering mortgages or savings accounts, achieving official bank status would be financially transformative for the firm. Currently, its stablecoin operation requires partnerships with existing banks to hold customer funds, meaning profits must be shared. By becoming its own national trust bank, World Liberty could hold those assets directly and keep all the interest earned from investing those reserves in U.S. Treasury notes.

Legal experts and policymakers suggest this path would have been nearly impossible under previous administrations regardless of party affiliation. Hilary Allen, a banking law professor at American University, noted that while several crypto firms are now seeking similar charters, this sudden openness reflects a broader push by President Trump to reshape federal policy in favor of an industry that provided substantial campaign support. The overlap between presidential influence over regulators and personal financial gain remains a primary point of contention for those watching the intersection of Washington power and digital assets.
