Mark Ruffalo blasts Paramount-Warner Bros. merger after judge clears $110B Hollywood deal

1 Mins read

Mark Ruffalo did not hold back his frustration following a federal judge’s decision to greenlight the massive 110 billion dollar merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery. Taking to social media, the actor described the ruling as incredibly disappointing, claiming that the consolidation of these two entertainment giants will ultimately stifle artistic creativity and threaten free speech. For Ruffalo, who has emerged as one of the most prominent voices opposing the deal, the merger represents more than just a business transaction; it is a victory for billionaire oligarchs over the interests of ordinary workers and creators.

The legal battle reached its conclusion on Wednesday when U.S. District Judge Araceli Martinez Olguin ruled that the acquisition could proceed, calling the arrangement a reasonable factual and legal resolution. This decision follows a settlement between Paramount and a coalition of twelve state attorneys general led by California’s Rob Bonta. While some saw the settlement as a win for domestic production, Ruffalo had spent days publicly urging Bonta not to cave to corporate pressure, warning that such concessions were insufficient to protect the industry from monopolistic tendencies.

As part of the agreement meant to appease regulators, Paramount has committed to maintaining a steady stream of content, pledging to release at least 30 movies annually for the first two years and increasing that number slightly thereafter. The company also promised that at least four films per year would be independent releases and vowed to inject an additional 1.5 billion dollars into U.S. film production over the next five years compared to previous spending levels. These promises were designed to counter arguments from critics who feared a reduction in competition and diversity within film distribution and cable programming.

Despite these safeguards, Ruffalo insists that this is not the end of the fight for those concerned about corporate greed in Hollywood. He told his followers that the grassroots movement sparked by this opposition will not fade away, framing the struggle as part of a larger war against wealth concentration in American society. With the deal now expected to officially close on October 6, many in the creative community remain anxious about how this new powerhouse will reshape the landscape of cinema and television moving forward.
