Ryan James Roach, a thirty five year old man who has resided in both Saskatoon and Regina, has been handed over to American authorities to face serious federal charges. Following a successful extradition process from Canada on October twenty eighth, Roach appeared in a federal court in Rochester, New York, where he faces allegations of orchestrating a sophisticated hacking scheme targeting university supercomputers across multiple U.S. states. During his initial appearance on November third, the scheduled detention hearing was postponed after Roach informed the court he was not yet prepared to proceed.
Federal prosecutors allege that between 2016 and 2019, Roach and an accomplice from Ontario named Mathiew James Stubbings hijacked the immense processing power of academic institutions in New York, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Massachusetts. By stealing login credentials and deploying malware via international virtual private servers registered under fake names, the pair reportedly forced these high powered machines to mine a cryptocurrency known as Electroneum for their own financial profit. While Roach has entered a plea of not guilty, the scale of the operation left behind significant wreckage for the affected schools.
The fallout from these breaches extended far beyond lost computing time. In one instance involving a New York state institution alone, officials estimate damages reached approximately three hundred thirty seven thousand dollars due to the costs of system shutdowns and extensive forensic reconstruction. Investigators with the FBI were able to build their case by tracing a complex digital breadcrumb trail consisting of IP addresses and server logs that led them directly back to Roach.
If convicted on charges including conspiracy to damage protected computers and theft of information, Roach could face up to ten years in prison per count along with substantial fines. As Roach remains held in custody awaiting his next court date in New York, legal proceedings continue in Canada regarding the extradition of his alleged co conspirator, Stubbings.
