Adam Iza once lived a life defined by extreme excess, surrounding himself with high end Ferraris, designer handbags, and custom Godfather sculptures. But the twenty six year old cryptocurrency trader discovered on Monday that his empire of influence has finally collapsed. A federal judge sentenced Iza to more than six years in prison for orchestrating a sprawling scheme that involved defrauding investors, evading millions in taxes, and most disturbingly, paying off Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies to act as his own personal mercenaries.
The details revealed during the proceedings paint a picture of systemic corruption where public trust was sold to the highest bidder. Iza admitted to utilizing hired deputies to weaponize the legal system against his rivals, using them to secure fraudulent search warrants and access confidential police data. In some instances, these sworn officers allegedly helped Iza hold victims at gunpoint or staged fake drug raids to extort thousands of dollars from individuals with whom he had financial disputes. Five former deputies linked to the operation have already been sent to prison for their roles in the conspiracy.
Despite the severity of the crimes, Iza will not see any additional time added to his current incarceration. Judge Percy Anderson ruled that this latest sentence would run concurrently with a fifteen year term Iza is already serving for a separate kidnapping and attempted Bitcoin robbery in Connecticut. While prosecutors argued for a harsher penalty to deter other wealthy individuals from attempting to buy law enforcement services, the judge noted Iza’s traumatic upbringing in Iraq characterized by poverty and abuse when deciding on the final terms.
Beyond the prison walls, Iza faces a staggering financial reckoning. He has been ordered to pay over twenty three million dollars in restitution to the IRS along with payments to several individual victims. As part of his plea deal, he surrendered an array of luxury assets including multiple Mercedes Benz vehicles and a distinctive Jacob and Co watch fittingly named the Godfather piece. Standing before the court as family members wept nearby, Iza claimed full responsibility for his actions and apologized for trying to operate above the law.
